F436 Washer Types

Portland Bolt manufactures the full range of ASTM F436 hardened washers for high-strength structural bolting. Each washer type below is built for a specific connection condition, whether that is a standard round hole, an oversized or slotted hole, a sloped bearing surface, or a location with limited edge clearance. This page gives an overview of every type and links to a detailed page for each, so you can find the washer that matches your connection and specification.

All F436 washers share the same core purpose: they provide a hard, heat-treated bearing surface beneath the turned element of a connection, resisting embedment into the connected steel and distributing the clamping load as the assembly is tightened. What differs between the types is geometry, thickness, and shape, each suited to a different situation. Washers are available in Type 1 carbon or alloy steel and Type 3 weathering steel, in plain and hot-dip galvanized finishes, with custom sizes and shapes manufactured to order.

Choosing the Right Washer

The right washer depends on the connection, not just the bolt size. Start with the hole and the bearing surface: a standard round hole on a flat surface calls for a standard circular washer, an oversized or slotted hole calls for an extra thick washer, and a sloped flange calls for a beveled washer. Edge clearance, bearing area requirements, and the material type of the surrounding steel then narrow the choice further. If your requirement falls outside the standard patterns, a custom washer can be manufactured to fit. Each type page covers when to use that washer, its finishes and material types, and its dimensions.
