Custom F436 Washers
What It Does
When a connection needs dimensions or a shape outside standard patterns, custom hardened washers are made to fit. Portland Bolt manufactures hardened washers with non-standard inside diameters, outside diameters, thicknesses, and shapes, including square, rectangular, custom-clipped, slotted, and other specialized profiles, to meet specific project requirements. Custom hardened washers can be made to ASTM F436, and non-standard round, square, or rectangular washers can also be furnished to ASTM A36 or A572 Grade 50 where those materials are specified.
Standard washer patterns cover most connections, but projects regularly present cases they do not. A bolt pattern may call for a larger outside diameter to spread load across a soft or coated surface, a slotted washer may be needed to allow adjustment, or a square or rectangular plate washer may be required to bridge a wide opening or bear against timber. When the requirement falls outside the F436 standard patterns, a washer built to the specific dimensions is the reliable way to get a proper bearing surface rather than forcing an off-the-shelf part to work.
Custom Capabilities
- Sizes — non-standard inside diameters, outside diameters, and thicknesses.
- Shapes — square, rectangular, custom-clipped, slotted, and special profiles.
- Finishes — plain and hot-dip galvanized.
- Materials — Type 1 and Type 3.
Choosing the Right Material
Custom washers can be produced as hardened washers to F436 or, where the design calls for it, from structural plate such as A36 or A572 Grade 50. The right material depends on the strength, hardness, and corrosion requirements of the connection. Where a hardened bearing surface is required beneath a high-strength fastener, an F436 washer is appropriate; where a larger structural plate washer is needed to distribute load, a plate-steel material may be specified instead. Confirming the intended material against the connection design avoids over- or under-specifying the part.
