Beveled F436 Washer
What It Does
On tapered flanges, a flat washer will not sit square, and the fastener seats unevenly. A beveled hardened washer has a sloped bearing surface that corrects for the taper, and is commonly used with American Standard (S-shape) beams and channels. The bevel lets the bolt head or nut seat properly and helps maintain uniform clamping across the connection. Beveled hardened washers are covered under ASTM F436.
The flanges of American Standard S-shape beams and channels slope at a nominal rate of 2 in 12. If a flat washer is used against that slope, the bolt head or nut contacts the washer on one edge only, which bends the fastener slightly and produces uneven clamping across the joint. A beveled washer places a flat, square bearing surface under the fastener while its tapered underside matches the sloped flange, so the clamping force is applied evenly and the fastener is not loaded at an angle.
When to Use a Beveled Washer
A beveled F436 washer is used wherever the bearing surface is not perpendicular to the bolt axis, most commonly the tapered inner flanges of S-shape beams and channels. It is not needed on wide-flange (W-shape) members, whose flanges have parallel faces. Where the surface is flat, a standard circular washer is correct. Selecting the beveled washer to match the actual flange slope is important so the fastener seats squarely.
Finishes and Material Types
Beveled F436 washers are available in plain and hot-dip galvanized finishes, with larger and special sizes manufactured to order. The finish and material type should match the bolt and nut used in the assembly.
